Water supply repairs

Drive down Constable Drive and today you’ll meet temporary traffic lights – and probably several water tankers.  At times the water pressure in Littleover, especially near here at the top of the hill, has been low.  What is going on?

Water is being pumped ino the reservoir, not because its usual supply needs repair, but because this reservoir is providing water to many more people in Derby than usual.  Tankers full of water are being brought in, from Raynesway on the far side of Derby and from Leicester.  Severn Trent need to keep this reservoir, and also the one feeding the water tower at Mackworth, topped up.

Across the city at Chester Green is the problem.  Here the major water main from Little Eaton – a 30 inch pipe – has broken and is being repaired.  New pipe sections have been sourced, and last night I was there to see the ‘collar’ amd fixings arrive, designed to connect the new pipe to the old.

This morning I heard that last night’s repair failed as the pipework was being recharged with water.  It is likely that a larger section of road will need to be dug up and a longer length of pipe exposed.

We can expect the tankers and temporary lights to be with us for at least a few more days.
