Let’s get gulleys working for winter!

by Lucy Care on 13 October, 2016

Drains in road gutters – known as gullies – help stop flooding by diverting rainwater away safely.

Or at least that’s the idea.  Too often they seem to be blocked.

This morning I passed a gully-clearing wagon working on Haven Baulk Lane, and later followed it along the lane towards Mickleover.  I hoped to catch it up and find it unblocking gullies I knew were blocked further along.  But sadly when I got there it had gone elsewhere.

I’ve now reported these gullies again to Streetpride.  Hopefully next time it passes the wagon will stop and clean them out.

You can report problems like this at http://www.derby.gov.uk/report-it/

As well as helping to keep our area working well  by reporting when things go wrong, we can also help prevent problems arising.  For example, gullies block when too much solid material goes down them, so muck from driveways, sand from laying paving and the like should not be hosed down into the gutter.
