Six years ago, when the busy Nationwide agency closed, many people assumed that in due course the Building Society would transfer this business to their newly acquired Derbyshire Building Society branch on the corner of Shepherd Street.

We now know that the Derbyshire branch will itself be closing this autumn.

Articles in Littleover Focus encouraged people to write to the Building Society.  But in vain.

I phoned the Building Society and was pleased that a regional director agreed to speak with me.  However he wasn’t swayed by my argument that Littleover needed them to remain, or that it would be worth staying as the only banking offer (apart from the Post Office) in the area.

I’m really disappointed that even as a ‘mutual’ organisation – owned by its members – the Nationwide gave so little weight to the importance of serving a local community like ours.
